How to Make Chai Tea Spice Mix
Whether you own a dehydrator or not, you can make your own chai tea mix. Begin by drying orange slices. I cut my orange into 1/8″ thin slices and then quartered them. Placed them on a parchment lined baking sheet so they would not stick to the baking pan. Then placed the pan in a low 200 degree oven to dry. It takes about 4-6 hours to dry your own oranges. Turning occasionally or if you own a dehydrator, it will take less time to dry.
Tip: If you don’t want to mess with drying your own oranges, some health food stores have herbals and may have dried orange peel which will work just as well.
Speaking of health food stores, you will need the following whole spices for this mix which can be found at a local shop. They buy these in bulk, and will be fresher than buying small jars at the chain grocery stores. Cardamon pods, cinnamon sticks, black peppercorns, star anise, all spice berries, whole cloves, coriander and fennel seeds, and crystalized ginger.
Mixing the Spices
Combine the dried orange slices or wedges and the rest of the ingredients except for the loose black tea, toss to blend. It is so pretty you will love it. Store the spice blend and the teas in separate airtight containers for up to 6 months. I didn’t have mine that long, because I gave most of it away and drank the rest. It is sooo good. Warms the soul.
Tip: I used loose English Breakfast Black Tea as the tea base, but any black tea that you love will work. You will need a strainer to remove the loose tea and spices.
For Gift; package spice mix in glass containers with a tight fitting lid, attach a small scoop, tea strainer and a package of loose black tea.
