How to Create This Patriotic Tablescape

Whether you are setting a table for two or thirty two this is a simple table setting. Begin the process with an inspirational trigger/piece to spark ideas. I used my patriotic white with navy star rimmed salad plates I had picked up last year from Kirklands. After a quick trip to Hobby Lobby’s fabric department I found this pretty red, white and blue fabric that I used to cover inexpensive charger plates. With those two items in hand, everything else about this table came together. I found red and navy hobnail small vases to run down the center of my long table, red and navy taper candles that fit perfectly in the vases, of course you could do single white flowers to get the red, white and blue effect.

The tablecloth I had and use it over and over as I love the color for summer entertaining. It’s made by Caribbean Joe’s Tablecloth in blue.  A white tablecloth would be lovely if you don’t like mixing patterns. The key to mixing patterns is keeping every element in the same color scheme. The red stemware I have had and use for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Patriotic themes. If you don’t have a set of 8-12 you might consider getting these red glasses, you will use them a lot. TIP: Get more red stemware than you will use in case you accidentally break some as this red is a ruby clear red and could be hard to find.

How To Create the Fabric Covered Chargers

Super easy project, You will need 2 yards of 45″ wide fabric to cover one side of 8 -10 chargers, a bottle of Mod Podge, Matte or Glossy, I used Matte, medium foam or bristle brush for coating the Mod Podge and 8-10 inexpensive charger plates. I found all my supplies at hobby lobby including the charger plates.

Make a paper pattern by tracing the upside down charger around the edges and adding 1″ all around. The extra 1″ will allow for the fabric to overhang the outer edge and inner flat area of charger plate.  When cutting the pattern, unfold fabric so you can get three plates across the width and to watch pattern so you can repeat the same pattern for each plate.

Brush the charger plate front completely with the Mod Podge Decoupage, carefully center the fabric over the plate. I do this by folding the fabric circle in half then half again, crease with fingers so you know where the center of the fabric is, then unfold the fabric circle.

Position the fabric circle by using your fold lines as a guide to center on the plate. Smooth center of plate first, then out to the outer edges. When surface is smooth and flat, turn charger over and brush decoupage on excess fabric and outer rim of plate, smooth fabric down onto the plate rim. Allow to dry before using or storing. No need to cover the back of the charger plate with fabric, however if you want to make a smoother cleaner finish you can cut a piece of felt and glue to the back of the plate. These chargers are not washable but you can use a disinfectant wipe to sanitize.

Festive Napkins Sets the Finishing Touch to this Table

For this tablescape, I used white cotton napkins with a navy scalloped edge folded in a nosegay tied with grosgrain red, white and blue ribbons. Using solid napkins with simple bows created calmness from all the pattern of the tablecloth and chargers.

To help create a cozy vibe for fireworks later in the evening, I used pillow covers and throw blankets on the outdoor benches.

Patriotic Red, White & How to make a Red, White & Blue Star Spangled Three Layer Cake lizbushong.com

This cake is amazing in flavor and design. Shopping at Home Goods store and saw this faux stacked cake that was red ,white and blue and thought to myself I can make something similar to this one. So.. that is what I did. Its a 4″, 6″ and 8″ round coconut cake with two layers each. Each cake has a different filling, the top 4″ cake is filled with home made blueberry filling, the 6″ cake coconut buttercream, and the 8″ cake is filled with home made raspberry filling. On the outside of the cake, I used a skim coat of coconut buttercream to catch all the loose crumbs, added dowels for stacking and securing the cake tiers then covered with bands and cut out stars made with Satin Ice Red, White and Blue Fondant.  Satin Ice is the best flavored fondant and easy to work with.
