When it comes to entertaining creating a table top with tulips is an easy look. The inspiration begins with Noritake hand painted tulip dinner plates signed by S. Kimuha. The plates are gorgeous on a pink & white polka dot tablescape. Accenting the dinner plates are pink with gold trim chargers with green and pink striped napkins folded in a rippled fashion. See video below on how to fold this napkin. Everything about this table is coming up Tulips! This tablescape was featured on the cover of my digital magazine, All About the Table.®

Nothing says spring more than tulips, pink and green which this table sports. For this table, the pink and white polka dot tablecloth I made since I couldn’t find a tablecloth to coordinate with the plates. A regional quilt shop had the perfect print as well as the green and pink striped fabric for the napkins. If you can’t find what you need check out fabric stores and make one or ask them if they know anyone who could?

Let’s talk about the napkins, the fold is called Irish Ripples which is a rippled looking napkin fold that was placed between the dinner plate and the pink charger. You can watch the video on how to fold this cute napkin. It was perfect for the setting especially since the green coordinated with the green leaves on the dinner plate.

The pretty plate is accessorized with a soft pink and gold trimmed charger with gold and white flatware. A dark green sherbet dish picks up the vibrance of the green leaves on the dinner plate. Going along with the polka dot motif gold and white dot cup and saucer adds to the overall color scheme.

How to Create a Beautiful Tablescape

Why do you want to set a pretty table? That is the main question… it isn’t just for entertaining or hosting a dinner party, setting a table for your family is probably even more important. A pretty table makes everyone feel special and makes your food more appetizing. It doesn’t have to be over the top extravagant but a simple setting and centerpiece will set the tone or mood for the meal. Expect laughs, “what” a set table?… or Us?  Who’s coming over for dinner? No really … who’s coming over? ExCetera, ExCetera…  This is your time to Shine so heres a few ideas to help ya.

First start with Inspiration.  My inspiration for this tulip table was the dinnerware. I had recently visited an antique store and the owner of the shop pointed out these plates. I knew I had to have them.  Since I have a table that seats 6 sometimes 8 guests, I usually purchase dinner plates in 6 or 8 pieces.

Tip:  If you don’t own the classic white dinner plate consider getting a set of 12, as you will use the white plate for many entertaining dinners/meals. You can add color in salad plates or dessert plates. I do not usually purchase printed dinner plates but on this occasion these plates were calling my name. ha ha They are elegant, and they selected my theme. Plus they were the right price. Loved the gold rim as I knew they would coordinate with my pink chargers.

Next, think about your dining table... Is the table top in good condition or should you cover it with a table cloth or maybe paint it?  My table was cherry and I painted it white.. Yikes! I know… it was a hard decision but I am so glad I did it. The table when I am not entertaining looks like a new table in my all white and gold dining room..

Tip: Covering the table with a linen or cotton tablecloth adds warmth to your settings, skip the plastic vinyl ones bring out the good stuff for your family and friends.

Dinner Plate as Inspiration Provided Color Scheme

You can see how easy it is to select a color scheme once you find your inspirational piece, Soft pink, Magenta, Various shades of Green, Gold are all seen in the dinner plate. so that is my color scheme.

I had the gold and white polka dot cup and saucer, gold & white flatware and pink charger from past table settings so it all came together. As you get in the habit of decorating your table you will be reusing your elements over and over. Stick with what you love or get some help from this website I just discovered for color palattes generator.

Also when setting your table look at the overall scale of your table so you select items that are not too big or too small as in centerpiece elements, if you don’t want to use a tablecloth use a table runner, chargers help balance the feel and look of the dinner plate so you don’t always have to have a place mat. However, color coordinated or textured placemats always are welcomed to a table setting. In my case, a placemat was going to be too large and over crowded for this particular setting.

Don’t forget to coordinate your table decor with the decor of the overall dining space. That is another reason I selected white and gold for a dinning room, I can use any color scheme with in reason in this room.

Tip: I use pillow covers to change out the seasons and help support the color scheme of the table. They are not expensive, easy to store and just enough to add cohesive look and feel.

Shades of Green Play Supporting Role

Because the dinner plate (inspirational piece) had several shades of green in the leaves of the tulips I could select several shades of green to compliment the settings. These bright green sherbet dessert dishes I had two from a light fixture I had just purchased but needed 4 more. LOL.  So I went to my antique shop and I found the exact same green dishes.. they had 4. It was meant to be!  (the light fixture will be coming out in Summer Issue of All About the Table).. You will love it.

The green and pink cotton napkin also complimented the shades of green. See video above on how to fold this napkin called Irish Ripples.  How fitting Irish and green. Hum…  The napkin is  two toned, on one side it is solid green the other is pink and white stripe. When you sew you can create what you want, if you don’t sew, you can hire someone or search for what you want.  Here is a  pink & white striped  napkin

Awe… you noticed! I didn’t use pink tulips in the centerpiece! Yes, I decided I had enough pink tulips in the dinner plate, pillows, and cake so I went with magenta roses, green button mums, white alstroemeria, and baby’s breath. Check out how to make this centerpiece as it was featured in All About the Table Magazine Spring Issue and on my Floral page DIY.

Tip: shop local grocery store floral department for fresh flowers. You can create something beautiful using grocery store finds. I prefer fresh vs artificial. Most all of my centerpieces are flowers from grocery stores or my yard.
