Before heading to the market for a few spices, make your own pumpkin pie spice for all of your fall baking. Why you might even make a pumpkin spice latte with this easy blend. Because the name pumpkin pie spice indicates pumpkin, there is actually no pumpkin in this blend. Its the spices that make us think there is pumpkin somehow in this mix.
What is in Pumpkin Pie Spice?
Pumpkin Pie Spice is pretty amazing flavors for fall baking. Ground cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg and all spice. Sometimes I will add a 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamon, but this is optional. Cardamon adds a bite to the spice almost like pepper but not hot, just a warm note to the mix. So you see, there is really no pumpkin in the spice, it just has the delicious blend of earthy spices that makes us think of pumpkin pie and pumpkin desserts.
Because Making Your Own Spice is Fun
Start with spices you probably have on hand, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice, ginger and cloves. Just mix all the teaspoons and tablespoons together in a small bowl. Whisk to combine. Using a small funnel, pour blend and shake into spice jar. Make sure your spice jar has tight seal to keep the spices fresh. Thats pretty much it.
Ground ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves, also not in photo, ground all spice, and cardamon.
Ground cardamon is optional but a small 1/4 teaspoon will add depth to the spice.
Funnel with spice blend. Be sure to label your new spice. Check out the clear label making without a professional label maker. (I did not create a professional label for this one.) Probably should. But it’s home made so the label is home made too.
